According to mermaid lore, the origins of the mermaid are a bit on the gloomy side. Magical, yes, but many cultural folk stories depict the mystical beings using their magic for darker deeds. Tempests, tidal waves, and tempted sailors were all blamed on the mermaid.
Those mean mermaids wouldn’t necessarily inspire the most enchanted mermaid crafts for kids. However, curses and storms aside, the very idea that a mysterious part-human/part-fish creature might be swimming around under the sea is still pretty incredible.
Luckily for us parents however, some fairy tales portray mermaids as benevolent, aquatic creatures who help and protect humans. These kindhearted, magnificent mermaids are exactly what we are going for here with these amazing mermaid crafts for kids!

1. Mermaid Terrarium
I actually remembered to take pictures during this “arts and crafts time”, so you get a mini-tutorial demo of sorts for this mermaid craft.
My daughter and I LOVED creating this fantastical mermaid terrarium. It was straightforward and really enjoyable to put together. Even growing the crystals wasn’t too labor-intensive. We generally love all Creativity for Kids products, and this mermaid terrarium was no exception.
We especially loved how the little blue light on the top of the terrarium lit up the underwater scene, giving it a magical vibe.
Making the Mermaid Terrarium Craft for Kids
Here is a simple breakdown of what you can expect with the Creativity for Kids Mermaid Terrarium Kit.
First we decorated the outside of the terrarium with the stickers and gems that were included in the kit.
Then we stuck the pearls onto the squishy starfish.
(Note: When you smush down the starfish, it turns the light on and off. ?
Then we added the sand. This was a fun sensory bit for my daughter. She got really into it.
Next we arranged the little mermaid on her shell amidst all of her jewels and gems. The kit includes a little bit of putty that you use to stick everything into place.
Then we mixed up the crystal solution in 3 separate glasses. We left them to grow overnight. It was really cool to watch them come to life.
After that we put it all together by arranging the crystals around the mermaid, creating the coolest aquatic scene!
