Teaching Your Toddler About Gender Equality and Feminism
Teaching your toddler about gender equality and feminism isn’t necessarily easy. The two ideals can be seen as big abstract concepts with loads of context and history surrounding them. Plus, the concept of gender and all that goes with it (gender norms, gender roles, gender expression), can be a lot of unpack for a toddler.
But at their core, feminism and gender equality are centered around a few simple principles that your toddler will very likely be able to grab onto. And they will sport their feminist t-shirts with pride!
Here’s my toddler wearing this year’s International Women’s Day shirt from Old Navy!
Basic Feminist Principles for Toddlers
The foundational principles of feminism aren’t always worded in the simplest terms. But this handy bullet list can give you some language to use when teaching your toddler about feminism.
Throw on some matching feminist t-shirts and share one of these ideas to help instill your values. 🙂
- All genders should have the same opportunities to do well in life.
- Men are not better than women.
- Believing in gender equality and feminism does not mean believing that women are better than men.
- Everyone deserves basic human rights.
- Some old beliefs and rules about gender are unfair and need to change.
- Oppression (the act of using power to treat people badly) of any community or group is wrong.

Tools and Resources for Teaching Your Child About Gender Equality and Feminism
Becoming aware of your own gender biases and increasing your awareness about gender equality is a great first step as a parent. And there are tools and resources that can help.
Global Partnership suggests a toolkit for teachers from VVOB that could easily translate for parents. From the VVOB website: “The GRP4ECE (gender-responsive pedagogy for early childhood education) toolkit empowers preschool teachers and school leaders to challenge gender stereotypes.”
In addition to things like this toolkit, there are loads of websites that offer resources about how to talk to your kids about feminist ideals like gender equality and dismantling gender stereotypes. Sites like genderspectrum.org and The Equality Institute are excellent places to start.
I also recommend you check out these fantastic children’s books about female empowerment and these fun activities for kids about Women’s History Month.
